Florida State Pilots Association Scholarship Opportunities

Each year, the FSPA identifies two minority cadets attending any of the six maritime colleges nationwide who show enthusiasm and aptitude for a possible career track as state pilot. These cadets each receive a two thousand five hundred dollar award during the school year. These cadets are encouraged to complete a brief internship with a state pilot association so they are exposed to all aspects of a pilotage career.

Scholarship News in 2006

Two cadets from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are the 2006 recipients of the FSPA Academic Scholarship Program. Midn. Heather Schon, 1C and Midn. Larry Green, 2C visited the Port of Miami in May to each receive their two thousand five hundred dollar award.
Cadet Schon, a Florida native, and Cadet Green, a Georgia native, accompanied Captain Mark Schmitt on various ships in and out of Miami during a twelve hour shift. Both cadets hope to spend several days later in the year with the Biscayne Bay Pilots to gain further exposure to rigors of the job.
Miami FSPA Director Captain Jim Harhart coordinated this year’s efforts with all maritime academies over a period of several months in order to identify.

On hand to present the awards were Miami Pilots Mark Schmitt (far left), Stuart Lilly (center), and Jim Harhart (far right).
